We had a great workshop and were happy to have a rousing discussion with all participants, two of whose work in particular, resonates with our own efforts. They are MediaThread, the video annotation system developed by Columbia University to aid in the use of video as a means of evidence in scholarly work:

Jonah Bossewitch was there to give us details of this innovative system (which some of us have explored).

The other project comes from LAMPlatoon, whose goal is to "put ads on notice" as a means of navigating the complexities of today's media landscape and talking back to media in order to help expose the biases of the dominant narrative: http://thelampnyc.org/lamplatoon/

DC Vito, LAMPlatoon's executive director, was there to share his insights into education with media, particularly at the K-12 level.

Both are excellent projects, well worth checking out and we are delighted to have had Jonah and DC in our workshop, in addition the other participants who had so much to offer!

The Genre Bus project unites members of disparate communities—international students from Illinois State University and community members at a local farmers’ market—and through a blend of face-to-face and digital efforts—facilitates their interactions as they work collaboratively to complete meaningful, real-world ‘writing’ projects via podcasts.  Although service learning is hailed as an effective model for connecting students and their communities, current models retain an “in here/out there” perspective that fails to address community needs and also fails to offer an inclusive field for studying literate activity.  The Genre Bus cultivates a “right here” perspective on writing by moving outside of the framework of the university and through an explicit model for grassroots writing research.

Due to the capacious affordances of digital filmmaking, we can document our engagement with emergent rhetorical practices. Fortunately, such projects are increasingly viewed as valid, credentialing forms of digital scholarship. This particular film was published within a webtext (which details the theory behind and process of making the film) in Enculturation: A Journal of Writing, Rhetoric, and Culture.

"Filmic Texts and the Rise of the Fifth Estate" is the first publication in Scalar, a multimedia authoring tool that allows one to make use of available semiotic resources. The article, published in the International Journal of Learning and Media, outlines an approach to digital pedagogy premised on the notion that the affordaances of the digital endows film with book like characteristics.
